Six apps in your Dock tip

Apple kept showing off the iPad with four app in the dock. You can actually put six down there. Tap and hold on an app until the apps jiggle, then drag two of your favorite apps down. That's it.

Tap Home to Get Home Tip

Press the Home button while on navigating your Home screens to return to the main Home screen. Tap it again to get to the search page.

Double Tap to Swipe

Swiping your finger across the screen to move from one home screen to another can wear you out. Instead, double tap on the right or left hand side of the iPad screen right above the dock. Whoosh, you're transported to the next screen.

Double Tap for Music

Listening to music and you want to switch to the next song without exiting the app you're in? Double tap the Home button and just like the iPod touch and iPhone, an iPod controller will appear. Skip to the next song or launch the iPod app from there.

Safari Quick Scroll Tip

Need to get back to the top of a webpage? Tap the menu bar to zoom back up to the top. This works on your iPhone and iPod touch as well.

How to reinstall misbehaving Apps

If an app is still acting wonky, even after a hard reset, it's a good idea to reinstall it. Make sure you have a copy of the app on the computer you sync you iPad to. On the iPad hold down on the app until it gets the jiggles. Click the X that appears above it and delete it.  Sync your iPad and be sure to include the offending app. Unless the app is just buggy by design, you should be good to go.

iPad Hard Reset

If your iPad's giving you trouble, just like the iPhone and iPod touch, you can hard reset it. Just hold down the Home and Top button until you see the Apple logo. This is usually a great fix for misbehaving apps.

Volume/Mute Button Tip

Did you know that if you hold the volume button down it will mute your iPad?

iPad charging tip

Did you know that the iPad charges with a different wattage (10W) than the iPhone? So your iPhone wall charger won't work. Also, it takes approximately twice as long to charge the iPad with your computer. So use the iPad wall charger to charge your iPad up the fastest!

iPad proving invaluable for Marine Corps aviators

Here's an article from the Shepard Group:
May 31, 2011
USMC aviators in Afghanistan are using iPads loaded up with maps of the southern regions of the country to reduce their workload in the cockpit.
Since November last year, marine pilots have been using iPads and more recently iPad 2s with digital maps, which allow the crews to search out locations in the region at the tap of the screen rather than flicking through map packs that are heavy and take up room in the cramped cockpits of aircraft such as the AH-1W Cobra and the F/A-18 Hornet.
The idea was developed by an enterprising Cobra pilot from one of the deployed HMLA squadrons, and has spread rapidly through the deployed squadrons.
Because of the nature of international operations in Afghanistan, crews have to carry a vast range of maps covering the country to be able to work with troops on the ground. Across the region, ground forces use a numbering system for the compounds located within a particular grid reference.
Often it's difficult to be sure which compound is which, but the map removes much of the guesswork, particularly for those on fixed-wing types which get an almost top-down view of the region. Identifying compounds from helicopters that fly at lower levels is trickier but has been made significantly easier.
'It's a game changer,' said Capt John Belsha, one of the sensor operators on the KC-130J Harvest Hawk, which is also making use of the iPads in the close air support role.
'In the past we have had to carry all the paper charts and the grid reference graphics we use as a reference for the ground forces in the area. If we had to carry every single one of them – we could on the Hercules, we have the room – but if you have a small cockpit like on the Cobra it's not feasible.'
Work is now ongoing to get the iPads equipped on aircraft based in the US, so they can be used in training.
'It's all about sharing situational awareness and using the iPad is much better than using a paper chart,' Belsha said.
'It takes five minutes to teach someone how to use the thing – it’s so intuitive and easy, you don't really have to think about it.’

A press release from Alaska Airlines concerning iPads...

Alaska Airlines Pilots Go Lean And Green With iPads

First major domestic airline to use iPads to replace flight manuals
5/27/2011 9:12 a.m.

SEATTLE - As part of an ongoing effort to use technology to enhance flight safety, improve efficiency and protect the environment, Alaska Airlines is issuing iPad tablet computers to its pilots. The 1½-pound iPads replace up to 25 pounds of paper flight manuals that pilots are required to carry when they fly.

The iPads are being distributed to all Alaska Airlines pilots, a process that will be complete by mid-June. This follows a successful trial by 100 line and instructor pilots and Air Line Pilots Association representatives, who evaluated the feasibility of using iPads as electronic flight bags this past winter and spring.

Alaska Airlines is the first major domestic airline to use the iPad to replace paper manuals.

"We've been exploring the idea of an electronic flight bag for several years, but never found a device we really liked," said Gary Beck, Alaska Airlines' vice president of flight operations. "When the iPad hit the market, we took one look at it and said this is the perfect fit."

The iPads contain an app called GoodReader that is loaded with PDF versions of 41 flight, systems and performance manuals, reference cards, and other materials. The electronic manuals include hyperlinks and color graphics, enabling pilots to find information faster and easier. Updating these reference materials can now be accomplished with one tap on the iPad screen instead of the former, labor-intensive process of replacing individual pages with new ones. The iPad is considered a Class 1 electronic device, meaning it is stowed during takeoff and landing under Federal Aviation Administration regulations.

In conjunction with replacing paper manuals, Alaska Airlines is exploring the replacement of paper aeronautical navigation charts with electronic versions on the iPad, eliminating the need for every pilot to carry their own copy. The two initiatives, dubbed "Bye, Bye, Flight Bag," will save about 2.4 million pieces of paper.

The cost of the project is expected to be offset by lower paper, printing and distribution expenses and reduced fuel consumption as some weight is removed from the aircraft. Further savings are expected from fewer back and muscle injuries caused by pilots carrying flight bags that can tip the scales at 50 pounds or more fully loaded.

Note to news media: A high-resolution photograph of an Alaska pilot with the iPad on the flight deck of a Boeing 737 is available in the airline's online newsroom image gallery at www.alaskaair.com/newsroom.

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK), together serve 90 cities throughout Alaska, the Lower 48, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico.
